Very subtle, great skill!
BTW: Were you inspired by the movie "Perfume"?
If not, go and see it; you'll know why I asked!

I've never seen Perfume, but I'll have to check it out! This one's based on Summer Wine, a Lee Hazelwood song.

Beautiful and moody. You captured such a specific time of day and believable southern climate! Great job. I'm curious about your process from traditional to digital. It inspires me to experiment more with the combination as well.

Thank you! While I didn't chart the process on this one, you can see the pencil/charcoal drawing at my blog (link below) - I added color to it in PS with a bunch of layers, mostly Multiply, Color, and Overlay with a few opaque layers for the white highlights.

Ahh, thanks for the link and insight! That's so cool to see. Seems very difficult to distinguish between so many greytones and textures just using pencil. Do you have something to put around your drawing hand to prevent from smudging the lighter parts? Congratulations on a very succesful technique ^^!

Working on gray paper seems to help, since the midtones will be not pencil/not smudgy. Other than that, I just keep a sheet of paper under the hand I'm drawing with - not perfect, but it seems to help.
